    About Me

    Dr. Joy Kilani

I don't teach English. I work with people.

    My name is Joy Kilani.

I studied in Santa Barbara, California, USA. My academic background combines Human Behavior with Common Law and Civil Law.

Many years of my life have been shaped internationally. Professionally and privately, my path has taken me through the United States, Europe and the Middle East, including New York, Dubai, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Abu Dhabi and Qatar.

For more than three decades I have worked with national and international clients from different countries, cultures and professional fields.

My clients' success matters deeply to me. Not as a marketing line, but personally.

When someone suddenly speaks more clearly, develops a stronger attitude, trusts themselves more and shows up with a clear stance, that means a great deal to me.

People always meet me as equals.

I am warm, very empathetic and direct. That mix helps me not only to listen to people, but to really understand them. Humor is simply part of it for me. When people laugh, they let go of pressure, they open up and they dare more.

If I am honest, one thing matters most in my work:

    The human being.

I love my work. I love working with people. That is exactly why I studied Human Behavior and earned my doctorate in it.

Every person is different. That is what still fascinates me. There is no template for personality. No two people think, feel or communicate alike. It is precisely this variety that makes my work exciting again every day.

I read situations very quickly, notice small changes in voice, posture and expression, and often recognize early where someone is pulling back inside, even though professionally they already know what they want to say.

Sometimes my clients even tell me they do not notice how much they are learning, because we laugh so much during the coaching.

My coaching sessions are not a NASA manual and not rocket science.

They are human, clear and close to the situations people really experience in their working lives.

I am not a classic English teacher.

I am bilingual and speak English and German.

    My English sounds very American.

My German is more of a Limited Edition. German umlauts are still not my best friends. And I believe that will stay that way.

That is why I am very grateful to ChatGPT for writing my German texts. Otherwise my emails would probably end up in Denglish. And even I would probably not understand them.

Before the pandemic, much of this was more personal, more direct and closer.

Today, much of it takes place online. That is practical, flexible and international. But sometimes I miss exactly that human element, that genuine closeness in contact.

Perfection was never the goal for me.

    Authenticity was.

People do not have to speak perfectly.

They should dare to be themselves.

Because that is exactly where real connection begins.

In my private life I am the mother of an adult son and I live with my two sweet Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, Cookie and Leo, who are firmly convinced that the world belongs to them.

    That is me.
